Impressive autocomplete with a personality

I've been the skeptic in every AI conversation since 2023. Never once caught myself thinking Claude was actually thinking. I also love using it. The two things are not in tension.

We named this technology AI, and it's good enough at the job that we've stopped questioning the name. What we have right now is a very impressive autocomplete with a personality. Self awareness or real understanding? Not yet. Maybe never with this architecture.

We'll need a different kind of technology before something we can fairly call AI shows up. What we have now is closer to a translator than a mind. Still genuinely useful. Still not what people think it is.
